Study on the impact of free trade agreements on India's economic growth and development
Authors
Dr. Prashant Kumar Singh
Abstract
The concept of free trade agreements (FTAs) has gained significant attention in the global marketplace over the past few decades. These agreements are established between two or more countries with the aim of promoting trade by eliminating barriers and restrictions on imports and exports. India, being one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, has also actively engaged in signing FTAs with various countries. This abstract will examine the impact of free trade agreements on India's economic growth and development. The research paper analyzes empirical evidence from various studies to understand how these FTAs have influenced India's economy. India’s participation in FTAs began in 1992 when it signed a bilateral FTA with Sri Lanka, followed by several other agreements with different nations such as Singapore, South Korea, and Japan. However, its most significant FTA to date is with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Signed in 2009, this agreement eliminated tariffs on more than 90% of traded goods between India and ASEAN countries. The objective of this research is to analyze the impact of free trade agreements on India's economic growth and development. This will be achieved by examining the trends in trade flows, foreign direct investment (FDI), and overall economic performance before and after the implementation of FTAs. The study will also investigate the sectors that have benefitted the most from these agreements and identify any potential challenges or drawbacks.
